How Jadua Jewelry is made

Many people are confused whether jadau to be a type of stone or jewelry, but it is a traditional technique to create kundan or polki. While Kundan and Polki are stones, Jadau is a technique used to create jewelry. ‘Jad’ meaning to be embedded and that is the technique used by artisans who craft this style of jewelry.  Jadua jewelry is essentially a technique wherein precious gemstones such as uncut diamonds, pearls, emeralds and rubies are embedded into gold. The gold is turned into a frame on which precious stones are studded without the use of any adhesive.

The process of creating Jadau work is complicated and involves a group of craftsmen dedicated to their artisanship as the jewelry takes a long time to make – setting just four to five stones can take a entire day. Each craftsman has a specific task enhancing the beauty of this intricate artwork. The primary design of the ornament is made by the chiterias. Then gold is melted just enough to make it pliable, for making holes and engraving. Once it becomes that way, the stones are set on it. Care and finesse are required to do this job precisely. Once the gold cools down, the gemstones adhere to it without any help, this is done by the ghaarias. Finishing touches of enameling to decorate the back of the ornamental jewelry with Meenakari is done by a Meenakar.

It’s a intricate process requiring utmost care and finesse. While a smaller pieces can be finished in a couple of days, an elaborate piece can take up to a few months to be ready. A single piece of jewelry can take a group of about 15000 artisans to produce.

This makes it one of the most expensive forms of jewelry.
